The Limestone County courthouse built in 1919 remodeled in 1975 and currently under renovations was the fourth courthouse. It is a Classical Revival structure and is part of the Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The beautiful Elk River is the perfect place for canoeing and kayaking in Limestone County, Alabama. The water is challenging and the scenery is beautiful. As you travel the Elk River in the fall, you will see the beautiful fall colors, especially during October. In the spring, the white dogwood and redbud trees, blooming along the riverbanks, are breathtaking.

The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is held annually the first weekend of October at ASU. The Athens State University (ASU) Foundation and the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce sponsor the convention. Proceeds from the convention have funded over $500,000 student scholarships and other university projects. The convention attracts more than 20,000 people for the two-day event and more than 200 musicians participating in the musical competition.

Singing on the Square is held the 3rd Friday night of each month, April - September - downtown Athens, AL. Local entertainers perform a variety of music including, gospel, country, bluegrass, big band, and more. The singing is free and everyone should bring his or her lawn chairs.

Art on the Square (AOTS) is held annually the 1st Saturday in September. There is live entertainment, delicious food and a special kids art area, which includes face painting, games, pottery and more.

Welcome to one of America’s best small town communities, Athens and Limestone County, Alabama. Athens, the county seat, is uniquely located on Interstate 65 in a triangle of prosperity formed by Huntsville to the East and Decatur to the south. The commute from most of Limestone County to Gate 9 on Redstone Arsenal is 15 to 30 minutes and not much more from the most distant communities.
