Battle of Athens – $150.00 (18″ X 24″) – The morning of September 24, 1864, found the small North Alabama town of Athens completely surrounded by 4,500 Confederates under the command of Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest.  The encirclement had been completed during the night in a downpour of rain.  Smoke was still rising from the Federal’s commissary supplies, the Press Tanner store, and both the Roswell and William Hines’ stores.  These and other structures in the town were torched the night before in scattered skirmishes with the town’s Union Army garrison.  A general advance on the fort was signaled by the guns of Captain John Morton, Forrest’s Chief of Artillery, around seven o’clock in the morning…

The Union column charged on, driving Roddey’s men before it, until it reached an orchard 200 yards south of the fort.  By this time the Union flag had been lowered and a Confederate flag was spotted flying above the parapet.  The fort’s two captured artillery pieces had been turned on the Union relief column.  The heavy fire began cutting the branches from the trees above the men huddled on the ground for shelter.  After over three hours of hard fighting, one hundred and six soldiers, about a thirdof the Union relief force’s 378 men, had been killed or wounded..

The surrender of the fort and the relief column on the 24th of September, allowed General Forrest to turn his attention to his real targets: the railraod, it’s blockhouses, and the fort at Sulfur Creek Trestle.
